Social media platforms have been abuzz with the news of the suicide of the Omani feminist activist known as “Reema,” who had been residing in London. Activists reported that Reema, who had previously declared her atheism and sexual orientation, fell into a deep depression, leading her to overdose on drugs. Her last tweet, posted in May, was directed at her partner, stating, “I will love you forever, dear.”
A Saudi feminist was the first to announce the news of Reema’s death, expressing her grief and shock. The Saudi activist mourned Reema, describing her as a beautiful presence in their lives. On the other hand, many criticized Reema and the feminist movement, warning of the uncertain fate that befalls many like her. Some activists, however, defended Reema, criticizing the conditions in Arab countries that force individuals like her to leave their homeland. The Yemeni feminist activist based in the US, Majda Al-Haddad, raised suspicions about the possibility of Reema being murdered, suggesting that her online presence indicated a love for life and hope.
