Watan- In a recent revelation, Ahmed Al-Tantawi, a potential Egyptian presidential candidate, disclosed that he was prohibited from attending the soccer match between Egypt and Ethiopia held on Friday. In response to this claim, the ticketing company “Tazkarti” issued an official statement, though it conspicuously avoided mentioning Al-Tantawi by name.

The incident began with a tweet from Al-Tantawi on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter). He questioned, “Was my presence today at a soccer match between the national team and Ethiopia on Egyptian soil considered a threat to civil peace or public security? Is my being turned away at the stadium gate and returning to my office now going to help defend Egypt’s right to life and the Nile waters, of which approximately 86% comes from Ethiopia?”

He further added, “Is there any meaning to sports without the real fans? How many countries in the world restrict fans from entering stadiums except on special occasions and with peculiar procedures? How long will my movement among the citizens on the streets or any public place continue to invoke such fear from those who claim to be powerful, self-confident, and loved by the people?”

In a swift response, “Tazkarti” addressed Al-Tantawi’s tweet but attempted to downplay his political significance, whether as a former parliamentary deputy or as a potential presidential candidate. The company’s statement detailed that Al-Tantawi arrived at the Air Defense Stadium at gate 4 in a private car around 6 PM. He then moved to gate 5, designated for visiting fans, and finally to gate 1, holding a ticket but without the required fan ID card. The company emphasized the standard procedures for all sporting events, urging fans to adhere to them.

Al-Tantawi has frequently expressed his grievances about facing severe restrictions in Egypt, especially since announcing his intention to run for the presidency. Meanwhile, authorities, through affiliated media personalities, have been sending messages suggesting that the electoral atmosphere is free and fair, and that everyone has an equal opportunity to express their opinions.
