Watan- In a recent revelation, Egyptian opposition figure, Ali Hussein Mehdi, released a series of videos described as leaked footage from inside the country’s prisons. These videos prominently feature several leaders from the Muslim Brotherhood group, who have been incarcerated since the ousting of the late President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, following the military coup led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the current ruler of Egypt.

One of the videos, captured from a surveillance camera, showcases Mahmoud Ezzat, the Deputy Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood. He appears in a lamentable state inside a solitary confinement cell, visibly struggling with severe illness.

Another clip displays a Brotherhood leader engrossed in prayer within his solitary cell. Mehdi commented that this particular leader spends most of his time in incarceration devoted to prayer.

 

Yet another video, which Mehdi claims features the detainee Salah Sultan, was shot inside his solitary cell in Badr prison. However, Mohamed Sultan, Salah’s son, clarified that the individual in the video is not his father. He urged caution against using his father’s name for political agendas. Human rights activist, Sarah Mohamed, identified the detainee in the video as Hamed Seddiq, who is believed to be in a cell adjacent to Salah Sultan’s in Badr prison.

The leaked videos have ignited a wave of reactions and solidarity from activists and human rights advocates. While the source of these leaks remains undisclosed, some speculate that they might have been released by certain factions within the Egyptian regime.

Prominent activist, Sherine Arfa, in a tweet, postulated that the heart-wrenching video released by Ali Hussein Mehdi is a message from some regime insiders to the Egyptian populace. The underlying message being: “He has become a burden on us and you… when will you revolt?”

Abdullah Al-Sharif, a renowned YouTuber, encouraged his followers to watch the leaked videos, emphasizing their significance.

Human rights advocate, Haitham Ghoneim, raised concerns about the privacy of inmates, given that promotional videos from Egypt’s Ministry of Interior show surveillance cameras in female inmates’ cells. He also highlighted the potential for the Public Prosecution to verify all cases of medical negligence in prisons by reviewing the recorded footage.

Mehdi has hinted at the release of more leaks in the coming days, claiming possession of 70 hours of footage, including videos of other notable figures such as Sheikh Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, Engineer Khairat El-Shater, Dr. Mohamed El-Beltagy, among others.
