Horrific Crime in Najaf: Child Slain in Broad Daylight

Watan – In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across Iraq, a 13-year-old boy was brutally murdered in the middle of Ansar Market in Najaf on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Eyewitnesses, who were present at the scene when the gruesome act took place, reported to the Iraqi channel Al-Fallujah that a large man cold-bloodedly slit the boy’s throat.

Security forces swiftly cordoned off the crime scene, and with the help of local citizens present in the market, apprehended the suspected perpetrator. Preliminary investigations suggest that the crime was premeditated, with the assailant seen sharpening his knife and lying in wait for the young victim before committing the heinous act.

Several videos circulating on social media platforms captured the chilling moments of the crime and the subsequent arrest of the suspect. The incident has evoked strong reactions from netizens, with many expressing their shock, anger, and grief over the senseless killing.

Raghad Al-Hayali commented on the incident, stating, “Brutality has increased significantly. What could have possibly driven someone to commit such a heinous act?” Another user, Farhad, criticized the Iraqi authorities and system, suggesting that the country promotes violence and lacks humane and tolerant education. Baraa, commenting on the incident, pointed out the laxity in the legal system, stating that the perpetrator might face a mere 3 to 5 years in prison, similar to another recent case where a child was killed.

Najaf, along with other provinces in Iraq, has witnessed a series of crimes targeting children and women. Simple disputes over issues like inheritance, broken engagements, or marital separations can escalate to the use of firearms or other lethal means, as reported by Al-Sumaria.
