Derna’s Lone Survivor: The House that Defied a Deluge
A house that survived the Derna floods

Watan – In the Libyan city of Derna, a catastrophic flood left a trail of destruction in its wake, submerging homes, roads, and landmarks. Yet, amidst the devastation, one house stood undamaged, defying the odds and capturing the attention of many.

Social media platforms buzzed with images of this resilient home. While the surrounding structures lay in ruins, this solitary house remained untouched, its white walls gleaming amidst the mud and debris. The stark contrast between the before and after images of the area paints a vivid picture of the extent of the devastation. Derna, once a bustling city, lost a quarter of its area to the ravaging floods.

The miraculous survival of this house became a focal point of discussion among netizens. A social media user commented, “This is a real house, not a product of photoshop. It faced the fury of Hurricane Daniel just like the rest of Derna. Yet, it remained largely unscathed. Its pristine white walls were not even tainted by the muddy waves. Never underestimate the power of faith. I’ve read that the owner might be a sponsor of orphans or perhaps he is diligent in his daily recitations.”

Another user tweeted, “This house in Derna stood firm, not swept away by the flood. Its owner adhered to the divine laws of causality set by God. If God intends harm for you, none can avert it but Him. The owner of this house understood and followed these divine laws during construction, and thus, he was blessed and protected.”

Abdulaziz Al-Mahmoudi weighed in, saying, “The owner of this house saw his home stand firm amidst the torrential floods. Don’t just scroll past. Read till the end. It’s said that this man sponsors orphans and supports the memorization of the Quran. God is great.”

Official statistics from Libyan authorities paint a grim picture. Approximately 7,642 properties in Derna were affected by the floods. Of these, 891 were completely destroyed, 211 suffered partial damage, and 398 were inundated with mud. The total area affected by the floods spans around 6 kilometers, with a staggering 25% of the city completely obliterated.

As Derna embarks on the path to recovery, the story of this lone house serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the mysteries of faith.
