Amidst Derna’s Deluge: Libya’s Heartbeat of Unity and Compassion
Libya confronts the floods with clothes for the living and shrouds for the deceased.

Watan – “Al-Monitor” recently spotlighted the aftermath of the catastrophic floods that engulfed Libya, focusing on the heartwarming resurgence of national unity that emerged from the shadows of this tragedy.

In the wake of devastating floods that ravaged the eastern city of Derna just two weeks ago, a group of committed women in Libya’s capital has risen to the occasion. With a sense of urgency, they’ve skillfully crafted clothing for those affected and shrouds for the departed.

Libya, a nation marked by its tumultuous past and divided between two rival governments, witnessed a profound surge in unity following the disaster that took thousands of lives. “Our center has always been a pillar of support for the disadvantaged. This tragedy has only deepened our resolve,” commented Mohammed Kamour.

Since the onset of the floods on September 10th, these dedicated individuals have been tirelessly producing garments to aid Derna’s residents, a city located over 1300 kilometers (800 miles) away. Kamour, who typically focuses on helping widows and divorcees achieve financial independence, noted that their regular programs were paused to prioritize this urgent relief effort.

So far, their efforts have resulted in the shipment of 1,300 school uniforms, 850 abayas, and 650 shrouds to Derna, with another batch currently in preparation.

The disaster in Derna, reminiscent of a tsunami in its intensity, has claimed at least 3,800 lives. However, international aid organizations estimate that the true number, including those lost to the floodwaters or buried under debris, could exceed 10,000.

Despite political differences, Kamour’s initiative found resonance throughout Libya, receiving support and requests from all corners of the nation. Against this backdrop, individuals, united in their mission, meticulously organized and prepared garments, from traditional abayas to medical gowns and shrouds.

“Our connection to Derna goes beyond mere geography. It’s the shared heritage of Libya that unites us all,” expressed Karima Wanees.

Jan Freides, a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Libya, shared his insights from the affected areas. He observed an overwhelming wave of support from Libyans across the country. Freides emphasized the community-driven efforts, from tribal groups to local businesses, all rallying towards Derna with a unified goal: to support, reconstruct, and heal.

The International Organization for Migration reported the displacement of over 43,000 people from the impacted areas. Social media platforms played a pivotal role in mobilizing assistance, with posts underscoring the critical nature of the situation. Volunteers from all walks of life came forward, embodying the spirit of unity and collaboration that has defined Libya during these challenging moments.
