Despite their dislike for Hamas.. why do Arab leaders call for a ceasefire in Gaza?

Watan-Arab leaders’ dislike for Hamas can be traced to reasons rooted in its Islamic origins, in addition to its relationship with Iran, according to Politico magazine. The magazine reported that many Arab leaders harbor animosity towards the Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, and are not opposed to seeing the movement struck.

In its report, the magazine added that this animosity stems from reasons including the Islamic roots of Hamas and its association with Iran. The magazine quoted a senior Israeli official who previously stated that there is a significant difference between the public and private reactions of Arab countries, highlighting that most Arab nations consider Hamas an enemy and seek to deter it.

The report continued: ‘Despite their disdain for Hamas, many Arab leaders urge the United States, both privately and publicly, to pressure Israel into accepting a ceasefire.’ This partly arises from their concern that the citizens’ anger may turn against them due to images of Palestinian martyrs and casualties.

The magazine pointed out that Israel does not seem to be responding to warnings from figures like Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to ‘stop this madness.’ Israeli officials insist that they are doing what is necessary to save civilians, but the increasing level of Palestinian suffering is becoming increasingly difficult for Israel to explain, the magazine noted.

At the same time, Politico stated that the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is facing pressure from progressive Democrats and some Americans to end the war in Gaza. However, the White House does not necessarily want to stop the fighting, at least not yet.

The magazine added that even if the United States were to do so, it is likely that Israel may not heed its advice.”
