In turn, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Observatory expressed its horror and shock upon receiving a video showing an Israeli military vehicle intentionally running over the body of the Palestinian martyr.
The observatory stated in a release that the Palestinian martyr was attempting to cross the passage designated by the occupying army (the main Salah al-Din road) for the evacuation of Palestinian civilians from Gaza City and its northern areas to the southern regions. However, he was fatally shot and then deliberately run over by the military vehicle, ostensibly for symbolic purposes.
Human rights oranizations express alarm at the use of the martyrs’s body
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Observatory clarified that its teams have documented various Israeli violations since the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip on October seventh of last year. These violations include the use of Palestinian martyrs’ bodies for symbolic purposes, as well as acts of torture, abuse, desecration, and even dismemberment.
Human rights condemnation of the Israeli crime
In its statement, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Observatory condemned the Israeli soldiers’ flaunting of the use of the martyrs’ bodies for symbolic purposes, considering it a reflection of the soldiers’ sadistic severity and a blatant violation of the rules of war.
The observatory emphasized that international law mandates the respect and protection of the bodies of martyrs during armed conflicts, as outlined in Article 115, which calls for the obligation to search for the dead, collect their bodies, evacuate them, respect their bodies, and maintain their graves. The Fourth Geneva Convention specifically emphasizes the need for parties to the conflict to take all possible measures to prevent the looting of the dead and the mutilation of their bodies.
Six weeks of the Israeli war on Gaza
The Israeli war on Gaza has entered its sixth week, resulting in more than 11,000 fatalities and 28,000 injuries so far.
The ongoing Israeli war on Gaza has led to the destruction of approximately half of its buildings, including hospitals, which were not spared from occupation forces’ attacks. Additionally, the occupation forces have targeted several hospitals, leading to power cuts and even the disruption of oxygen supplies crucial for patients.
