Watan-Speaking from inside the Gaza Strip, against the backdrop of scenes depicting the displacement of Palestinians, James Elder, the spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), expressed strong emotions and criticized the West’s double standards.

In a video clip, Elder stated, ‘I was in Ukraine when families like these were forced to flee, and at that time, the world opened its heart to them. But I don’t understand why the world is closing its eyes now.

James Elder’s outburst was prompted by distressing scenes showing a large number of Palestinians fleeing their homes in search of safety in the Gaza Strip, which is under bombardment from all directions.

85% of Gaza’s Population Displaced

The United Nations previously declared that approximately 85% of Gaza’s population has become internally displaced due to the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, now into its third consecutive month.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported that nearly 1.9 million people in Gaza (out of a total population of 2.3 million) have become internally displaced.

Congestion in Shelter Centers

According to the UN agency, around 1.2 million of these displaced individuals are registered in 156 UNRWA facilities across Gaza, with approximately one million registered in 99 UNRWA shelters in the central and southern parts of the Gaza Strip.

Estimates suggest that another 191,000 displaced individuals are residing in 124 public schools and hospitals, as well as in other places like wedding halls, offices, and community centers. Meanwhile, remaining families either host others or live in makeshift shelters near the shelters.
