Ahmed Al-Shaiba Al-Nuaimi’s Brave Condemnation of UAE’s Rights Violations
Watan-The Emirati writer and opposition journalist Ahmed Al-Shaiba Al-Nuaimi affirmed his criticism of the human rights violations by the authorities of Mohammed bin Zayed from the heart of Dubai for the first time in 11 years.
This came during a speech by Al-Nuaimi – via video technology – at a human rights event during the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 28).
“Joy Shia,” a researcher in the Middle East and North Africa department at Human Rights Watch, participating in COP 28, stated that Ahmed Al-Nuaimi joined the event of the Northern Council in Dubai via Zoom.
Al-Nuaimi tweeted on the Ex platform, “For the first time in 11 years, I delivered my speech in the UAE, and I spoke about news that shocked the attendees.
The Emirati opposition writer shed light on the serious violations of the most basic rights suffered by opinion detainees under the authorities of bin Zayed, in accordance with all international and humanitarian laws.

Serious Violations of Basic Rights in the UAE
The writer Ahmed Al-Shaiba Al-Nuaimi revealed that opinion detainees in the UAE are facing a new trial after completing their sentences.
Al-Nuaimi commented on this: “Imagine finishing your sentence, which is 10 years, and instead of being released, you go to a new trial, the sentences of which may be as long as you spent in prison.”
He added, questioning: “What kind of human rights mockery is this in this country?! And by what law are they governed?” He concluded his tweet on the Ex platform, saying: “May God fight against injustice and the unjust.”
In recent years, Abu Dhabi has enacted laws that activists describe as conflicting with the constitution and foundational laws of the state, violating the most basic human rights of expression and opinion freedoms.

The source noted that the participation of a UAE activist and his discussion of human rights during an event held within the UAE’s territories, such as COP 28, is considered completely unprecedented in the country during the last decade due to the absence of a human rights space and the suppression of freedom of expression.
A Dangerous Step Against Emirati Detainees
It is worth mentioning that the Center for Advocacy of Detainees in the UAE confirmed what Al-Nuaimi mentioned about the Abu Dhabi security apparatus renewing the trial of dozens of detained Emirati activists in its prisons, most of whom have completed their sentences, on charges related to terrorism.
The Emirati 71 website considered this step to be dangerous, indicating that the authorities seek to extend the detention period for these detainees.
Among the accused are “Sultan bin Kayed Al-Qasimi, Professor Khaled Al-Shaiba Al-Nuaimi, Dr. Mohammed Al-Rakan, Dr. Hadeef Al-Owais, and Professor Mohammed Abdul Razzaq Al-Siddiq.”
The list also includes “human rights advocate Ahmed Mansour, detained since 2017, and Dr. Nasser bin Ghayth,” along with other activists living outside the country.”
