Voices from Captivity: Israeli Mother and Daughter Speak on Treatment by Palestinian Resistance in Gaza
Two Israeli Female Prisoners

Watan-Two Israeli female prisoners (a mother and her daughter), released from Gaza, spoke about the treatment they received from Palestinian resistance during their captivity in the Strip.

The daughter, Agam, mentioned that she requested the driver of the vehicle that transported them to Gaza to keep them together, and he immediately agreed. She expressed her astonishment that the resistance made sure they stayed together in one place.

She added that she had an image in her mind that she would be bound in prison and that she would spend the rest of her life in Gaza.

The second prisoner (her mother) Chen Almog Goldstein mentioned that the resistance fighters would talk to them about the famous Israeli prisoner Gilad Shalit with smiles, confirming that she, too, was afraid that she would stay in Gaza for years.

She pointed out that the resistance fighters would inform them that the Israeli authorities did not care about them and reminded them that it took five years to release Shalit.

She continued: “Sometimes we would walk inside the house to move our bodies and bones. They would say, ‘If you want to go to the salon, let us know.’ Sometimes they would sit and watch us.”

She emphasized that they were never left alone at any moment, and their guards were very close to them. She revealed that she was afraid at any moment that the army would come to rescue them because the guards were always nearby.

The guard played with the prisoner without touching her.

The daughter explained that she was allowed to engage in sports, and the members emphasized the importance of what she was doing. She mentioned that the second prisoner played hand-to-hand combat with one of the guards.

The mother revealed that the guard used a towel so as not to touch her. The daughter interrupted, saying, “Women are sacred to them in Gaza; a woman there is like a queen.”

The mother disclosed that the guards asked her to ensure her daughter’s modesty. She told them that her daughter had friendships sometimes before getting married and encouraged her to learn. However, for them, marriage comes first.

The daughter explained that the guards told her she would be married in Gaza, and they would find a man for her there. The mother revealed that the guards gave her daughter a beautiful Arabic name, Salsabeel, which means sweet water and is mentioned in the Quran.

It’s worth noting that Hamas and other resistance factions had released about 50 Israeli prisoners, including women and minors, in exchange for the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails during November of last year as part of a humanitarian ceasefire agreement.

The movement has repeatedly announced the death of several prisoners in its custody due to the intensive and indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip.
