Tensions Rise: Egypt’s Response to Israel’s Philadelphia Axis Ambitions

Watan-The Egyptian academic, Dr. Mustafa Kamel Al-Sayed, described the Israeli announcement of its desire to control the Philadelphia Axis as a serious matter. He stated that any military movement along the border strip jeopardizes the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

The professor of political science made televised statements to the Qatari Al Jazeera channel, emphasizing that the peace treaty between Cairo and Tel Aviv includes a military annex that specifies the situation in the axis and prohibits such a step.

Al-Sayed added that when Israel militarily moves in the Philadelphia Axis, it constitutes a violation of the peace treaty. He believes that Egypt will address the U.S. administration regarding these irresponsible statements and hold it responsible for implementing and protecting bilateral agreements, including the military annex related to the Philadelphia Axis.

The Egyptian academic suggested that Washington is keen on avoiding a major breach of the agreement while simultaneously seeking to expand peace treaties with countries in the region.

However, the professor of political science at the University of Cairo ruled out Egypt taking the step of freezing the agreement, given the continued opening of channels of communication with Israel to stop the war in the Gaza Strip and provide humanitarian and relief aid.

Options for Egypt in the event of Israel’s occupation of the Philadelphia Axis

Mustafa Kamel Al-Sayed further elaborated on Egypt’s options in the event of Israel taking control of the Philadelphia Axis. He stated that one of the reasons for the non-collapse of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt is Cairo’s role as a mediator in any understanding between resistance movements and the occupation.

He explained that freezing the peace agreement is not a declaration of war, but it puts Egypt in a position of hostility towards the occupation, distancing it from providing aid to the Gaza Strip.

The Egyptian academic anticipated that his country would diplomatically press to prevent Israeli military intervention in that region, ruling out the use of the Egyptian armed forces if its national security is not at risk.

An Israeli magazine calls for opening a front against Egypt: “Sisi is our friend but not playing his role as he should.”

He also highlighted that freezing the peace agreement is not a declaration of war but puts Egypt in a position of enmity towards the occupation, hindering its ability to provide assistance to the Gaza Strip.

Serious Israeli Statements

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made statements that were described as serious regarding the “Philadelphia Axis” area on the border with the Gaza Strip. He stated that it must be under Israeli control, and any alternative would not be accepted.

Netanyahu, in his speech last Saturday, conveyed by Hebrew media, stated that Israel would continue the war to the end and work to control the “Philadelphia Axis” on the border between Gaza and Egypt. He emphasized that Israel is fighting on “all fronts” in a war he mentioned would last for several more months.

The Israeli army had deployed numerous forces between the Kerem Shalom crossing and Rafah, along the Philadelphia Axis, and conducted a short exercise. The resistance reportedly opened fire on the Israeli forces, according to the Hebrew “Walla” website.
