Biden’s Dilemma: The Dangerous Escalation in the Middle East and the Toll on American Soldiers

Watan-Professor Abdullah Al-Shayji, a professor of international relations at Kuwait University, considered the killing of 3 American soldiers and the injury of others in a drone attack on a base in Jordan as a “dangerous development that confirms the failure of Biden’s strategy in not expanding the war theater.”

Al-Shayji questioned in a series of tweets on his X platform account, “Will Biden directly strike Iran or its proxies to retaliate and respond to the attack and the killing and injury of American soldiers?”

He believed that “the region is pregnant with surprises, and Biden is paying a costly price for his unconditional support for the Zionist war on Gaza.”

Emphasizing that the question remains about where and how Biden’s response to Iran will be, Al-Shayji stated, “The situation is serious and warns of escalation.” He added that “Biden today is a presidential candidate and will face pressure to respond, as well as the Supreme Commander of the US Armed Forces.”

He also said that President Joe Biden is in a dilemma, and the Republicans will use the incident to escalate against him, considering it the cost of leniency and support for Netanyahu without limits.

In another tweet, Al-Shayji stated, “Biden has started inciting to strike Iran in retaliation for the killing of 3 American soldiers and the injury of 34 others. With the escalation and incitement from Republican senators like Graham and Cotton, along with Netanyahu and his failed fascist gang and the arm of the Zionist lobby in Washington – the Middle East Studies Institute and its director Satloff – Biden is being incited to directly strike Iran, not its proxies in Iraq or Syria.”

He mentioned that Biden pledged to respond at the time and place of his choosing, which Trump started doing. Therefore, if he does not act, he will be accused of weakness, cowardice, and the loss of deterrent power. Trump has already started attacking Biden, describing him as weak for political gain.

An official from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that if the United States continues to support Israel, there will be escalation.

A source from the Iraqi Islamic Resistance stated that the drone that killed the American soldiers originated from within Syrian territory.

Meanwhile, a US military official confirmed to Al Jazeera that the number of injured in the attack on US forces in Jordan has risen to 34. The US administration quickly accused Iran-backed groups of carrying out the attack.

This incident marks the first time that American soldiers have been killed in attacks on American interests since the beginning of the war on Gaza.
