Watan-Osama Hamdan, a leader in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), affirmed that the leaked information about Hamas accepting deals related to a ceasefire in Gaza is not true. He stated that it is an attempt by the occupying government to alleviate pressure on itself.
Hamdan, in statements to Al-Jazeera Qatar, mentioned that Hamas has not provided any response to these deals, particularly those brokered by Qatar after a quadripartite meeting in Paris to halt the war in Gaza.
This statement comes after a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the northern and western parts of Gaza, marking the first time since the beginning of ground operations.
The Palestinian leader clarified that Hamas will decide and respond when the time is right. He stated, “When things mature, the movement will present its response and reach an agreement. It is natural then to announce it, but until this moment, there is no response from the resistance regarding the proposal, and thus, there is no agreement.”
Regarding the leaked Israeli claim of Hamas accepting the deal, Osama Hamdan confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under intense pressure from the ruling coalition and the families of captives within the resistance. He emphasized that Netanyahu is facing increasing internal pressures and accusations of evasion and lying.
Netanyahu faces internal pressures
Netanyahu is repeatedly accused of evading and lying by settlers who assert that the occupation is not concerned about the fate of their sons. Therefore, the Israeli Prime Minister is making intense efforts to alleviate this pressure while insisting on the continuation of the actions in Gaza, according to the Palestinian leader.
Israeli media mentioned that the War Council discussed details of a proposed prisoner exchange deal after talks held in Paris.
Qatar and the United States indicated progress in this file. Meanwhile, Hamas stressed that any agreement is contingent on a ceasefire in Gaza.
Talks with factions
A Palestinian source reported on Thursday that Hamas is still in talks with Palestinian factions to formulate a unified stance on a proposed prisoners exchange deal with Israel and a ceasefire in Gaza. The intention is to present it to the Egyptian side.
Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement, Ziyad al-Nakhalah, announced on Tuesday that his movement would not engage in any agreements regarding the Israeli war on Gaza without a comprehensive ceasefire guarantee.
He clarified that the movement sent inquiries to the Egyptian side about the deal’s details, including the issue of the army’s withdrawal from Gaza during the proposed truce period in the first part of the agreement.
Details of the Qatari deal in Gaza
Regarding the possible details of the deal, sources explained that it includes:
- The release of 35 Israeli detainees in Gaza in the first stage in exchange for a 35-day truce.
- The possibility of extending the truce for an additional week.
- Negotiations to complete a second phase of the deal and release additional soldiers.
- The deal does not include a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza.
According to the numbers announced by the Israeli occupation, there are approximately 136 Israeli captives in Gaza, while the occupation detains at least 8,800 Palestinians in its prisons. However, there is no confirmation of the final number from both parties.
