U.S. Seeks Third Countries for Deporting Undocumented Migrants
Washington negotiates with nations in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe amid challenges in returning migrants to their home countries.
Watan-The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking alternative countries to deport undocumented migrants to, amid difficulties in having their home countries accept them.
According to American officials, the U.S. is negotiating with countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe—including the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo—to receive migrants deported from the United States.
Washington is reportedly looking for countries willing to host these migrants, especially in cases where their countries of origin refuse to take them back or delay the repatriation process.
Reports indicate that the U.S. has entered talks with countries such as Libya, Rwanda, Benin, Eswatini, Moldova, Mongolia, and Kosovo. In return for their cooperation, Washington is expected to offer financial or political incentives.
The U.S. is also aiming to sign agreements with some Latin American countries to designate them as “safe countries” where migrants could apply for asylum. Negotiations are currently underway with Honduras and Costa Rica in this regard.
