Palestinian Doctor’s Heroic Act: Saving Lives Under Sniper Fire in Gaza

Watan-Palestinian doctor Amira Al-Assouli has become a symbol of great heroism after a video of her rescuing a wounded Palestinian youth outside the Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza went viral.

The video shows Dr. Amira Al-Assouli cautiously running bent over from the internal gate of the complex towards the outside to save a young man who had been shot by an Israeli sniper and was bleeding on the ground, while the sound of gunfire is heard everywhere.

Activists celebrated the courage of the Palestinian doctor who rushed to rescue the injured, defying the Israeli sniper’s bullets.

Dr. Amira Al-Assouli spoke about the details of the scene, saying that the pivotal moment in the circulated video, unseen by the public, was when she overcame her fear in a fleeting moment and decided to risk her life as a woman against sniper fire to save a young man from certain death.

She added that at that critical moment, she could have been shot by the Israeli sniper and killed, but patriotism, professional duty, and humanity necessitated the risk.

The doctor, who serves as a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology at the besieged Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, said that when the incident occurred, she was in her room and heard about the injured Palestinian youth. In coordination with her colleagues at the complex, she quickly made her decision and rushed to try to distract the sniper by bending down as much as possible.

She added: “When I reached the injured youth, I found him tying his leg with his shirt in an attempt to stop the bleeding,” and he asked her, “Are you going to cut off my leg?” to which she replied in the negative.

Immense joy

She continued: “I was overwhelmed with joy when I confirmed that he was still alive, and we managed to bring a stretcher and carry him into the hospital for treatment.”

The doctor confirmed that the condition of the injured youth has improved, and he is currently recovering in the hospital.
