Watan-The New York Times revealed that US President Joe Biden utilized his authority to delay the deportation of thousands of Palestinians from the United States for 18 months.

This comes amidst escalating criticism directed at the American President due to US support for Israel’s brutal war on Gaza.

According to the American newspaper, around 6,000 Palestinians are eligible for postponement under a program called “Deferred Departure.”

This program allows immigrants from crisis-stricken countries to stay and work legally in the United States.

In a memorandum, Biden stated that many civilians are still at risk in Gaza amid the ongoing war since October 7th, and he added, “Therefore, I have ordered the postponement of the deportation of some Palestinians in the United States.”

The decision comes at a time when Biden faces pressure regarding the war, especially among Arab Americans who were previously a reliable voting bloc for him.

In recent weeks, pro-Palestinian groups have protested outside his campaign stops, chanting “Joe, genocide supporter,” in reference to holding him accountable for what’s happening in Gaza.

Criticism of Biden’s stance on Israel’s war on Gaza has intensified since the attack on October 7th.

However, the United States has not indicated plans for significant policy changes such as placing conditions on billions of dollars in military aid to Israel.

Contradictory positions between Republicans and Democrats

In contrast, some Republicans have called for tough measures against Palestinians.

Former Trump administration official and Montana State Representative Ryan Zinke previously introduced legislation that would prevent Palestinians from obtaining entry visas to the United States and pave the way for their deportation.

Meanwhile, some Democrats in Congress have called on the US administration to find a way to protect Palestinians in the United States.
