Escalating Tensions: Washington Plans Arms Shipment to Israel Amid Threats on Rafah

Watan-Washington plans to send thousands of bombs and ammunition to Israel, at a time when Tel Aviv is preparing to launch attacks on Rafah, which hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced residents of the Gaza Strip.

The American newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” reported that President Joe Biden’s administration plans to send thousands of bombs and ammunition to Israel in exchange for tens of millions of dollars.

The American plan comes at a time when Tel Aviv is preparing to launch attacks on the city of Rafah, which hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced residents of the Gaza Strip due to Israeli attacks across the territory.

The “Wall Street Journal” quoted unnamed American officials as saying that the shipments of weapons include about MK-82 bombs, KMU-572 assault ammunition, and FMU-139 bomb fuses.

The value of the weapons and ammunition is estimated at tens of millions of dollars, according to the officials, who confirmed that the Biden administration is still studying those military shipments to Israel, and that the components of the shipments may change before they are presented to Congress.

The weapons delivery plan comes at a time when Israel plans to launch attacks on the city of Rafah, the last refuge for more than a million people in Gaza.

It was mentioned that the Israeli government wants to receive these weapons quickly due to regional threats.

It pointed out that the United States has provided nearly 21,000 precision-guided munitions to the Tel Aviv government since October 7, 2023, of which Israel has used half.

Israel currently announces its intention to invade Rafah in the densely populated southern region, after forcibly evacuating residents of the north and directing them south, claiming it is a “safe area.”

Mass displacement in Gaza

Israel, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians in its devastating wars on the Gaza Strip, has forced most Palestinians in the northern and central parts of the Strip to flee to the Palestinian city of Rafah, adjacent to Egypt, amid estimates that it hosts about 1.4 million civilians, amidst international warnings of its invasion.
