Watan-Social media platforms have witnessed calls to adopt the proposal put forward by Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi days ago regarding the veto right during a lecture at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies in Britain, where he addressed the Palestinian issue.
This comes after the United States obstructed for the third time a draft resolution within the United Nations Security Council calling for an end to the Israeli war and aggression on Gaza, using its veto power to block the resolution despite majority approval.
Albusaidi calls for abolishing the veto right
Albusaidi calls for abolishing the veto right, emphasizing the importance of this action due to the current political dynamics where decision-making is often dominated by a minority with the power to veto even unanimous decisions.
The Omani minister stressed the need to reform international institutions responsible for managing international relations, making them more responsive to contemporary challenges rather than focusing solely on solving yesterday’s problems.

Albusaidi also highlighted the urgency of establishing a Palestinian state and taking practical steps to ensure the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, urging swift international action to achieve this.
On February 16th, Badr Albusaidi delivered a lecture at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies in the UK, addressing the Palestinian issue and discussing historical developments and obstacles to reaching a comprehensive settlement based on the two-state solution.
He emphasized the need for a permanent solution to establish an independent Palestinian state to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people from poverty, deprivation, and daily humanitarian crises. He also called for an urgent international conference to reach executable agreements for a rapid and effective resolution.
The Security Council and the American Veto
Regarding the recent events at the United Nations Security Council, the United States exercised its veto power against a resolution proposed by Algeria calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons. The resolution received support from 13 out of 15 members, with the United States vetoing it and the United Kingdom abstaining.
Oman expressed regret and condemnation for the failure of the Security Council to issue a resolution to stop the ceasefire in Gaza due to repeated use of the veto. Oman continues to urge the international community and the Security Council to facilitate all initiatives calling for an immediate ceasefire in the region and not to obstruct the path to peace.
Oman also called on friendly nations to translate their positions and statements regarding peace into practical and fair humanitarian actions.
