Egyptian Crackdown: Solidarity with Gaza Sparks Arrests under Sisi’s Regime

Watan-Journalists and human rights activists in Egypt condemned the authorities of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for launching a campaign of arrests following a demonstration in support of Gaza in front of the Journalists Syndicate.

The Egyptian authorities conducted a wide-ranging arrest campaign against academics and activists who participated in a demonstration in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The demonstration started in front of the Journalists Syndicate building in the capital Cairo, only to be met with arrests by Sisi’s security apparatus, targeting activists such as Mohamed Awad, a member of the political bureau of the Movement for Justice and Freedom Youth, and engineer Mohamed Nawar, a member of the Hope Party still in the process of formation.

The arrests carried out by Sisi‘s authorities also included Abdul Karim Magdi and Mustafa Ahmed, according to journalist Qutb Al-Arabi and activist Ahmed Douma, following a widespread campaign against them to return them to prison where they spent ten years.

Egyptian activists and journalists condemned the arrests for their chants in support of the Palestinian people on Abdel Khalek Tharwat Street in downtown Cairo, condemning the abandonment of Gaza, which has been enduring continuous genocide for the seventh consecutive month.

The demonstrators demanded that the authorities supporting the Israeli occupation open the Rafah crossing and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, which is witnessing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe due to aggression and siege.

Growing Egyptian Anger

Egyptians expressed their anger at the policy of starvation and siege suffered by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with slogans reflecting a sense of shame and disgrace at the silence regarding the atrocious massacres committed by the occupation.

For 181 consecutive days, the occupation has continued to commit massacres as part of the genocide it is waging against the people of the Gaza Strip, targeting inhabited homes, medical and journalistic crews, resulting in the martyrdom of about 33,000 and the injury of more than 75,000 with various wounds.
