Watan-A senior American official said that President Joe Biden will announce in his State of the Union address that the military will establish a port on the coast of the Gaza Strip to receive aid.
The American official added in his statements that establishing the port will not require US forces on the ground in Gaza, and the forces will remain on ships off the coast.
It is worth mentioning that the “State of the Union” address, an American tradition inherited for a long time, brings together all branches of the federal government in one hall, where the US President speaks about the achievements of the past year and reviews his program for the next year.
The agency reveals details
The “Associated Press” agency pointed out that Biden will announce in his speech to the US military, today, Thursday, a plan to establish a temporary port on the coast of Gaza to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to the besieged sector by the brutal occupation.
The same official pointed out that establishing the port will take weeks and the first shipments will arrive from Cyprus.
He explained: “We will coordinate with Israel regarding the security conditions of the port on the coast of Gaza.”
Maritime dock
The agency quoted officials in the US administration who spoke on condition of anonymity as saying that the operation will not require the presence of US forces on the ground to build the dock, which aims to allow more shipments of food, medicines, and other essential supplies.
The officials did not provide details on how the dock would be built. One of them pointed out that the US military has “unique capabilities” and can do things “from the outside only.”
Democratic party members are pressing President Biden to stop the ongoing war in Gaza and provide more assistance to civilians in the sector.
Dozens of members of Congress have previously signed a letter urging the administration to reaffirm their country’s strong opposition to “forced and permanent displacement” of Palestinians from Gaza.
Maritime option Biden first raised the idea of creating a “maritime corridor” last week, saying that the United States is working with its allies on how to provide assistance from the sea to those in Gaza.
General Eric Correll, head of the US Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he briefed officials on such a maritime option.
Also on Thursday, the United States carried out a third airborne operation in the northern part of Gaza, where there is no Israeli presence.
Correll said that the Central Command has presented options to increase the number of trucks carrying aid to those areas.
Exacerbation of the humanitarian disaster
Five months of Israeli war on Gaza have led to the destruction of a large part of the sector controlled by Hamas, exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe.
Many Palestinians, especially in the devastated north, are scrambling for food to survive.
Relief groups say that it has become almost impossible to deliver supplies to most parts of Gaza due to the difficulty of coordinating with the Israeli occupation army, ongoing hostilities, and the collapse of public order.
