Palestinian Authority’s Dilemma: The Controversy Surrounding Marwan Barghouti’s Release

Watan-Media sources revealed that the Palestinian Authority stands in the same position as the United States and Israeli occupation in opposing the release of Fatah leader “Marwan Barghouti” as part of any prisoner exchange deal, raising questions about the reason behind this stance!

Private sources speaking to “Arabi 21” website clarified that the Palestinian Authority, represented by its current president Mahmoud Abbas, fears internal upheaval because of Barghouti, which could lead to them losing control over the movement and the authority.

Refusal to Release Marwan Barghouti

As for the United States, it opposes the release of the Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti in response to an Israeli demand in this regard.

This coincides, according to media and human rights sources, with assaults on Marwan Barghouti inside his cell in the Israeli “Megiddo” prison.

Knesset member Ahmed Tibi confirmed that Barghouti’s life is in danger due to him being stabbed twice in prison, holding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for his safety.

The assaults are seen by activists as part of an Israeli attempt to eliminate Barghouti in his prison.

What’s striking is the Palestinian Authority’s alignment with Israeli-American desire not to release Barghouti.

Authority President Mahmoud Abbas fears internal strife within Fatah and sharp polarization if Barghouti is released from prison, which could threaten his current position and control over the movement and the authority.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades stand with Barghouti

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades had published a statement confirming that one of its armed groups targeted the Sannur checkpoint as part of an open military activity.

The brigades operating in Tulkarem affirmed that the move was “an initial response to the attack on the leader Marwan Barghouti, the father of Al-Qassam.”

The statement warned “the cowardly occupation and its prison administration that harming the leader or targeting him means igniting a volcano and a flood of martyrs from the sons of Al-Aqsa Brigades.”

Media accounts had shared information indicating that the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas “insists on the release of leaders Marwan and Abdullah Barghouti and Ahmed Saadat from the occupation’s prisons in any prisoner exchange deal.”

Sources mentioned that Hamas will unify the West Bank and Gaza under one administration with its army and leadership, away from the Abbas-Abdullah axis, which the Palestinian Authority President fears.
