Security Council Passes Ceasefire Resolution for Gaza: Will Israel Comply?

Watan-For the first time, and in what was considered a departure of the United States from Israel, the Security Council voted on Monday on a resolution to cease fire in the Gaza Strip and accelerate the pace of aid delivery. Washington did not exercise its “veto power” as usual to stop the resolution.

According to details reported by international media outlets, after more than five months of war, the United Nations Security Council adopted its first resolution demanding an “immediate cessation of hostilities” in Gaza.

The United States abstained from voting after thwarting previous attempts to issue a resolution by resorting to its veto power.

The Security Council resolution to cease fire in Gaza

The Security Council resolution to cease fire in Gaza, supported by 14 members with one abstention, “calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities during the month of Ramadan,” which began two weeks ago.

It “should lead to a permanent ceasefire” and “calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

The United States did not veto the resolution and abstained from voting, making it the first ceasefire resolution adopted by the Council after four previous failures.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtayeh expressed hope on Monday that the resolution would be unanimously passed.

It is worth noting that the recent failure of the resolution was last Friday when China and Russia used their veto power against the American proposal.

Will Israel implement the resolution?

Many doubted the Israeli occupation’s actual implementation or acceptance of this resolution.

Analysts said that the aggressive occupation would continue its onslaught on Gaza despite the Security Council’s resolution to cease fire, amid hidden American protection despite Washington’s apparent opposition in public only.

Indeed, activists shared video clips documenting shelling operations in Gaza and the continuation of the aggression at the same time the Security Council voted on a draft resolution to cease fire in Gaza.

Former Egyptian Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei said the crucial matter now is for the Security Council to ensure Israel’s compliance and for all parties concerned to fully implement the resolution.

He added, “And for the United Nations to regain initiative in accordance with international law and the UN Charter in permanently halting the war and working towards ending the occupation and establishing the Palestinian state.”
