Israeli Airstrikes on Syria: Deadliest Attack in Three Years Leaves 42 Casualties
Watan-The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced an increase in the death toll from Israeli airstrikes on Syria on Thursday night/Friday morning to 42 fatalities.
The Observatory stated in a statement that the casualties included 36 from the regime forces and 6 from the Lebanese Hezbollah party, as a result of Israeli strikes targeting a missile warehouse belonging to Hezbollah.
It added that the targeted site is near a training center in the Jibrin area near Aleppo International Airport, after midnight on Thursday-Friday.
The most intense Israeli attack on Syria in three years
The bombing targeted defense facilities in Al-Safirah, while explosions were heard in Kafr Joum west of Aleppo, and the Syrian regime’s air defense missiles were launched to attempt to intercept the Israeli missiles and thwart the attack, but the missiles reached their targets.
According to the Observatory, this death toll among Syrian regime forces is the highest compared to previous Israeli strikes on Syrian areas, and it is the most intense on Syria in three years.
In a related context, the official Syrian news agency SANA quoted a military source as saying that Israeli airstrikes targeted several points in the countryside of Aleppo, resulting in casualties among “civilians and military personnel” whose number has not been specified.
Israel’s 28 Airstrikes on Syria
These airstrikes on the countryside of Aleppo came hours after an Israeli raid that killed two people in a residential building near the area of Sayyida Zainab in the countryside of Damascus, according to Syrian official media.
Since the beginning of 2024, Israel has targeted Syrian territories 28 times, resulting in “the injury and destruction of about 56 targets, including warehouses for weapons and ammunition, headquarters, centers, and vehicles,” according to the Syrian Observatory.
Since Operation Mighty Cliff, Israel has escalated its strikes on what it says are bases for Iran-backed armed groups in Syria. It has also targeted Syrian regime air defenses and some of its forces.
