Peru’s President Faces Scrutiny: The Rolex Scandal Unveiled
New Developments in the Case of the President of Peru and the Rolex Watches

Watan-In the midst of a scandal that has shaken the country on a wide scale, the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, appeared before the public prosecutor for questioning regarding her possession of Rolex watches, jewelry, and unexplained bank deposits.

The President of Peru remained in a questioning session for five and a half hours, at the office of the public prosecutor, Juan Carlos Viña.

The public prosecutor had previously stated that Boluarte was summoned to present her collection of Rolex watches to the investigators.

The President was asked to provide receipts and clarify the source of her valuable possessions as part of an investigation into suspicion of illicit enrichment.

The interrogation followed a police raid on her residence and presidential office on March 30th, in search of a collection of watches believed to include at least three Rolexes.

Protests Amid the Summons

In the same context, a small number of protesters gathered outside the public prosecutor’s office while the President was giving her statement.

The demonstration was predominantly attended by women expressing their support for the President, while another group chanted, “Dina, prison awaits you!”

According to Agence France-Presse, the government hopes that Boluarte’s testimony will put an end to the scandal that prompted two impeachment proceedings, both of which were rejected by the right-wing majority in Congress on Thursday.

Earlier, Prime Minister Gustavo Adriánzen stated, “I assume that after these clarifications, the public prosecutor will have no choice but to close this investigation.”

Adriánzen said that Dina Boluarte “knows how to explain what happened.”

The public prosecutor seeks explanations for Boluarte’s purchase of a Cartier bracelet worth $56,000, other jewelry valued at over $500,000, and bank deposits of around $250,000 dating back to her tenure as minister in 2021 and 2022.

Boluarte: Peru’s First Female President

Boluarte, a lawyer and former deputy to the previous president, became the first woman to assume the presidency in Peru after her leftist predecessor attempted to dissolve Congress and rule by decree, only to be swiftly ousted and arrested.

This was followed by protests, some of which turned violent, demanding Boluarte’s resignation and calling for new elections, and were met with a security crackdown resulting in the deaths of around 50 people.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into suspicions of the excessive and deadly use of force by security forces.

While Boluarte’s popularity rating stands at around 10%, she has stated that the police raid constitutes an attack on democracy and has caused political, social, and economic instability.

She previously emphasized that the watches are the result of her hard work since she was 18 years old.

Will She Be Tried?

If formal charges are brought against Boluarte in the case, the trial will not take place before the end of her presidential term in July 2026 unless she is impeached.
