Watan-The French authorities revealed that security forces arrested the mayor of a town and two of her brothers in a town in the east of the country, after 70 kilograms of cannabis were seized in her home.

The public prosecutor, Hugues de Phily, told Agence France-Presse that Jamila Al-Habsawi, the mayor of Avallon since 2021, was arrested after security forces raided her home and workplace.

The raid came as part of an investigation initiated by the authorities several weeks ago into drug trafficking operations in the small town, which has a population of six thousand people.

The public prosecutor explained that investigators searched Al-Habsawi’s home, the town hall building, and the pharmacy where she works as a pharmacist, but did not specify the quantity of drugs found in her home.

A source familiar with the investigation reported that security forces seized at least 70 kilograms of cannabis in Al-Habsawi’s home.

The public prosecutor further stated that a total of seven people have been detained for questioning in this case, including Al-Habsawi and two of her brothers.

Cocaine and gold seized

He added that the investigation also led to the seizure of 983 grams of cocaine, 7,000 euros in cash, and about 20 gold bars.

Security forces carried out this raid as part of a national campaign to combat the growing drug trade in French cities and towns.
