Saudi Citizen Arrested for Feeding Camel with Banknote

Watan-The Saudi authorities arrested a citizen who fed a camel a Saudi banknote, as documented in a circulated video, sparking a debate.

The General Security’s account on X-Twitter previously reported that the police in Al-Dawadmi Governorate in the Riyadh region arrested a person for deliberately damaging currency in visual content without mentioning his identity or name.

However, the General Security posted a picture of the accused without showing his face, appearing bound backwards. He was referred to the public prosecution to take necessary legal measures against him.

In the circulated video, the apprehended person appeared holding a 500-riyal banknote and offering it to the camel, which started to consume it to the tunes of a Saudi song.

Foolishness and extravagance

The behavior of the Saudi citizen and his disregard for his country’s currency stirred a wave of displeasure. Lawyer “Saud Aqil” commented that this constitutes foolishness in dealing with money, extravagance, citing the verse: “(And do not give the foolish your property, which Allah has made a means of support for you.)” He also quoted Al-Shafi’i saying: “The fool is the one who extravagantly wastes his wealth or his religion.”

Following this, the owner of the “Prince” account stated: “This is an example of celebrities who scatter their money in parties and festivals, leaving the poor and needy behind.”

“Badr” said: “Excellent news. This is disrespect and humiliation for the Saudi currency, as if it has no value to feed animals with.”

And Ibn Ba’ijan prayed in a supplicating tone: “O Allah, do not hold us accountable for what the foolish do. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your wellness, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your anger.”

“Abdulrahman Mohsen” commented: “The ignorant say that their own enemy.”

He added: “With that 500 riyals, he could have bought feed, alfalfa, and celebrated her with a better celebration.”

Penalty for disrespecting currency

According to Saudi Penal Law, anyone who deliberately, with malicious intent, changes the features of the circulating currency within the Kingdom, defaces it, tears it, washes it with chemicals, reduces its weight or size, or partially destroys it by any means, shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of up to five years, and a fine ranging from three thousand riyals to ten thousand riyals, or with one of these two penalties.
