Watan-It seems that a political earthquake has struck Israel following Qatar’s warning to cease its mediation role regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, amid Hebrew warnings of losing the role played by Doha.
The Hebrew newspaper “Haaretz” warned of Qatar’s loss of its role as a mediator between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement “Hamas,” in light of Doha’s announcement that it is reevaluating its mediation role.
Created a unique dynamic
Political analyst in “Haaretz,” Tzvi Bar’el, said that Qatar’s implementation of its warning would deal a serious blow to the negotiations and the chances of releasing Israeli detainees. He added that this is not only because Doha has significant influence over Hamas but also because it has managed to create a unique dynamic in the negotiations.
In a related context, “Haaretz” quoted an informed source as saying that Israel’s representatives in the negotiations, not the government, have a partnership status with the Qataris, and there is now personal acquaintance between the two sides, leading to mutual respect, which is vital for the success of the negotiations.
It is worth noting that Qatari mediation has led to the release of several Israeli detainees last November and has provided an open channel between Hamas and the United States.
However, the newspaper warned that a decline in Qatar‘s mediation role would deal a severe blow to the negotiations.
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman had announced last Wednesday that Doha is evaluating its mediation role between “Israel” and the Hamas movement regarding reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and the decision will be “appropriate.”
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman pointed out that Doha has positively contributed to the negotiations, attempted to bridge the gap between the parties, and it took months and wide disagreements, and Qatar tried with partners in Egypt and the United States to bridge that gap and offer proposals.
The Qatari Prime Minister stated: “Unfortunately, there is misuse of this mediation for narrow political interests, which requires a comprehensive evaluation of the mediation role.”
He also noted that Doha engaged in mediation from a humanitarian, national, and patriotic standpoint to protect the brothers in Palestine.
However, he continued: “Unfortunately, there are bids from some politicians with narrow interests, as they try to conduct election campaigns, and they say completely different things behind closed doors than in public,” without specifying them.
He indicated that Qatar will make the appropriate decision (regarding that evaluation) at the appropriate time.
