Watan-A tourist met her death after falling 250 feet into the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia while trying to take photos of the sunrise.
The victim, Huang Li Hong, a 31-year-old Chinese national, fell into the Ijen volcano crater in Indonesia on April 20, according to local media reports.
Reportedly, she and her husband, Zhang Yong, climbed down the slope with a local guide to catch an exciting sunrise from the volcano’s edge. However, as Huang Li Hong paused to take pictures, her backpack allegedly got caught, causing her to stumble. She ended up falling backward from the edge into the pit in front of her horrified husband.
One of the photos published after her fall shows the victim seemingly standing at the volcano’s edge with her leg raised, with steam and sulfur gas rising behind her. According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, it was reported that she fell from a height of 250 feet into the volcano crater. It took rescuers more than two hours to retrieve her body.
Dwi Putro Sugiyarto, head of the environmental conservation agency in the area, emphasized that tourists should always remain safe while climbing the Ijen volcano crater.
According to reports, her body will be transported to Bali before being flown back to China.
Mount Ijen is part of a group of volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java. It is known for its blue fire phenomenon, which is caused by ignited sulfuric gas emitted from the crater.
