Watan-A new scientific study, conducted over a period of 6 years on 3,000 individuals aged between 65 and 79 years old, revealed that the drug Metformin, which helps people lower blood sugar levels and treats type 2 diabetes, may help you live a longer and healthier life.
Researchers stated that they found the drug’s effects not limited to treating diabetes but could also protect against cancer, cognitive decline, heart diseases, urinary tract problems, and digestive issues, according to the American newspaper “New York Post.”
This could be attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties, according to the study.
Researchers also cited the testimony of West Hartford, Connecticut mayor Shari Cantor, and her lawyer husband Michael Cantor, both in their mid-sixties, who affirmed that the drug helped improve their lifestyles.
Michael started taking the drug 10 years ago to help control his weight and blood sugar, while Shari began during the COVID-19 pandemic after hearing it could prevent infection.
The couple noted a significant difference in their health and quality of life after taking the drug.
Stephen Austad, chief scientific adviser at the American Federation for Aging Research, who participated in the new study, confirmed that available scientific evidence supports the idea that Metformin extends human life.
Austad pointed to a British study that found the drug reduced the risk of dementia and death from cardiovascular diseases in people who took it to treat type 2 diabetes.
Austad and his team are seeking to conduct clinical trials on the drug to confirm their results, as their study was based solely on observation.
