Sudan Calls for UN Security Council Session Over Emirati Aggression: Tensions Escalate

Watan-In an indicator of mounting anger towards the suspicious role of Abu Dhabi, Sudan has submitted a request for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to discuss the “Emirati aggression against the Sudanese people.”

A Sudanese diplomatic official told Agence France-Presse that their country has requested the session to discuss the Emirati aggression against the Sudanese people and its support for the Rapid Support Forces in the war they are engaged in with the army.

The official added, “Our permanent representative to the United Nations has submitted a request for an emergency session of the Security Council to discuss the Emirati aggression against the Sudanese people, and the supply of arms and equipment to terrorist militias.”

In a related context, the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that Khartoum’s delegate, Al-Harith Idris, submitted the request in response to a memorandum from the UAE delegate to the Council, emphasizing that the UAE‘s support for the Rapid Support Forces makes it complicit in all their crimes.

This comes amid tension between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who effectively holds power in the country, and the United Arab Emirates.

Accusations against the UAE

The Sudanese army accuses Abu Dhabi of supporting the Rapid Support Forces and their leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, in the conflict that erupted between them in April 2023.

It is worth noting that last December, Sudan requested 15 Emirati diplomats to leave the country.

This came after a prominent army commander accused Abu Dhabi of supporting the Rapid Support Forces.

Simultaneously, protests erupted in the city of Port Sudan (eastern Sudan) demanding the expulsion of the Emirati ambassador.

In August, weapons were found on an Emirati cargo plane that was supposed to transport humanitarian aid to Sudanese refugees in Chad.
