Watan-The judicial advisor to the Israeli government, Galit Bahar Miara, has given the green light to present the issue of closing Al Jazeera’s office in Israel for voting.
According to Israeli media, the issue will be presented for voting tonight at the meeting of the mini-security cabinet, the “Cabinet”.
Cabinet members will vote on halting the broadcast of Al Jazeera in both Arabic and English in Israel, closing the channel’s offices, and blocking Al Jazeera’s websites, according to Israeli media.
According to the stance of the Israeli judicial advisor, it is possible to close Al Jazeera in Israel without granting the channel the right to respond to Israeli allegations against it, despite legal challenges in such a process, as Bahar Miara herself wrote in a memorandum to the legal advisor of the Israeli Ministry of Communications.
Reason for Israeli targeting of Al Jazeera
This move comes against the backdrop of Al Jazeera’s extensive coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza and its monitoring of war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.
The Likud party, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opposed the enactment of a law allowing restrictions on social media networks, but only on television channels.
Haim Nisimonsky, the head of the Cyber Department in the Attorney General’s Office, said that it is not possible to issue an order to close Al Jazeera’s widely spread Facebook pages, meaning that Israel does not have the technological capability to prevent the viewing of Al Jazeera in Israel.
Netanyahu’s pledge
Weeks ago, Netanyahu pledged to act immediately to prevent the broadcast of Al Jazeera in Israel, following the Knesset’s vote on a law allowing him to ban foreign media outlets that harm security in Israel.
This law, passed with a majority of 70 votes to 10, gave the Prime Minister the power to ban the broadcast of the targeted channel and to close its offices in Israel.
