The Positive Impact of Household Chores on Children’s Happiness and Academic Success
A study reveals that assigning household tasks to children enhances their academic performance, social skills, and overall well-being.
Watan–A recent study confirmed that assigning household chores to children from a young age plays a significant role in enhancing their happiness and academic success, as well as improving their social relationships.
According to the study, which followed around 10,000 children over four years, children who were assigned household tasks in kindergarten performed better academically in mathematics by the time they reached third grade, and they reported greater life satisfaction and developed more positive social relationships compared to their peers who did not participate in household chores.
The study, whose results were reported by the American network CNBC, indicated that these benefits were not influenced by factors such as the child’s gender, family income, or parents’ education level.
Commenting on these results, psychologist Adam Grant from the Wharton School of Business stated, “Assigning household chores to children is a key indicator of their happiness and success because it reflects parents’ confidence in their abilities, and it helps build their character and enhances their sense of responsibility.”
Simple Tasks that Increase a Child’s Happiness
Researchers noted that children can start taking on simple responsibilities at the age of 4, such as making the bed, watering plants, cleaning dishes, matching socks, and dusting with a cloth.
These findings support previous research, including a study conducted by Harvard University, which confirmed that children who take on household responsibilities early gain leadership skills and are more collaborative in future work environments.
