Watan-The donation campaign launched by Heba Rashid, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Mersal Foundation for Charitable Work, successfully surpassed the 4 million EGP mark. The campaign aims to equip operating rooms to save the people of Gaza and provide urgent medical support to the region.
Rashid launched the campaign on the second day of the Gaza truce and announced an auction for a personal coffee mug that holds significant sentimental value to her. She used it daily for her coffee while studying for her Master’s degree in Global Healthcare Leadership at the University of Oxford, which she described as her “dream university.”
Rashid emphasized that the auction for the mug was a way to support the preparation of two operating rooms and to send medical aid and supplies to Gaza. The auction started at 200,000 EGP, and with overwhelming public engagement, the total reached 4,239,627 EGP. The entire amount will be dedicated to supporting the Gaza Strip.
Heba Rashid said: “Since the ceasefire came into effect, I’ve been thinking about the most valuable thing I could offer to support the survivors of the war in Gaza.”
She added: “I found nothing more valuable than the mug I drink my coffee from every morning. I bought it when I received a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in leadership in healthcare at the prestigious University of Oxford. It reminds me of my arduous journey to achieve what I have today.”
According to the BBC, Rashid noted that the initial purpose of the auction was to sell the mug to one person. However, she was surprised by hundreds of donors who contributed thousands of pounds and relinquished the mug in support of the campaign, turning the auction into a financial donation drive.
It is worth mentioning that the Mersal Foundation organized humanitarian aid convoys to Gaza in coordination with the National Alliance for Civil Development Action. These convoys included 150 aid trucks at a total cost of 250 million EGP. The foundation also organized blood donation campaigns to meet the needs of Palestinians for blood and its derivatives.
Heba Rashid pointed out that the foundation’s efforts are not limited to supporting Gaza but also include providing social and medical assistance to Palestinian residents in Egypt.
She added that the number of Palestinian cases supported by the foundation has exceeded 2,500 individuals and families during the past period.
