Did Trump Betray Hamas After the Idan Prisoner Deal?

Hamas Claims U.S. Reneged on Secret Agreement After Freeing Israeli-American Captive in Return for War Truce and Aid Access.

Watan-In a significant development in the Gaza war file, a report published by “DropSite” revealed secret details of a deal between Hamas and the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, which led to the release of Israeli-American captive Idan Alexander, who had been held by Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.

According to a senior Hamas official, the group released the prisoner based on a clear agreement conducted through U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who conveyed direct guarantees from Trump’s administration. The deal included an immediate ceasefire, lifting the blockade on Gaza, and allowing the entry of urgent humanitarian aid.

Sources confirmed that Witkoff promised Trump would issue an official statement thanking Hamas for the initiative, followed by a public call for a ceasefire and the launch of comprehensive negotiations for a lasting end to hostilities—including a full opening of the crossings into the long-besieged Strip.

However, two days after Hamas fulfilled its end of the deal, none of the promises were kept. The White House issued no statement, border crossings remained closed, and the war continued unabated. Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim stated that Trump completely reneged on the agreement, turning the release of Idan into a broken political transaction.

Naim said explicitly: “Trump did nothing. His administration did not honor the agreement at all.”

Broken Deal with Hamas Deepens Mistrust in Trump’s Gaza Policy

These revelations have sparked intense criticism of the Trump administration’s credibility, with accusations that it deceived the Palestinian resistance in a critical moment—merely to retrieve one of its citizens without fulfilling any obligations in return.
Observers warned that such actions could severely complicate future prisoner exchange negotiations, as trust has been deeply eroded, undermining both humanitarian and political efforts to end the war.
This isn’t the first time Palestinian factions have accused the U.S. of political manipulation, but this case is backed by documents and direct testimony, marking a damaging black mark in Trump’s record regarding the Gaza war.
