UN Experts Condemn Arrest of Journalist Ali Abunimah in Switzerland

The arrest of "Electronic Intifada" director raises concerns over freedom of expression in Europe.

Watan-Human rights experts and activists at the United Nations on Sunday condemned the arrest of American journalist Ali Abunimah, the executive director of the “Electronic Intifada” website, in Zurich, Switzerland. They described the arrest as a serious threat to freedom of expression, particularly in light of the increasing restrictions on activists supporting the Palestinian cause in Europe.

According to a statement issued by human rights organizations, Swiss police arrested Abunimah, 53, on Saturday afternoon, prior to his scheduled speech in Zurich.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, called the news of Abunimah’s arrest “shocking” and urged Swiss authorities to investigate the matter promptly and release him. She emphasized that such actions are contrary to the principles of freedom of expression upheld by the United Nations.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, also commented, stating that “the environment surrounding freedom of expression in Europe has become increasingly toxic.” She added, “This issue should concern us all.”

Albanese affirmed that restricting freedom of expression threatens the fundamental principles of human rights, especially concerning issues related to defending the rights of oppressed peoples.

Entry Ban

The Swiss police stated that the arrest was due to a ban on Abunimah entering Switzerland, adding that they are considering additional measures under immigration law.

The “Electronic Intifada,” led by Abunimah, describes itself as “Palestine’s weapon for comprehensive education,” publishing content that supports the Palestinian cause and criticizes Israeli policies.

Meanwhile, a Swiss human rights organization supportive of Palestinians issued a petition demanding Abunimah’s immediate release. The petition argued that the arrest constitutes a violation of freedom of expression and poses a threat to activists advocating for human rights.
