Turkey’s Baykar Establishes “Atlas Defence” in Morocco to Boost Local Drone Industry

Baykar launches Atlas Defence in Morocco to locally produce Bayraktar TB-2 and Akıncı drones, strengthening military ties with Turkey.

Watan-Moroccan reports have revealed that the Turkish company Baykar, a leading firm in drone technology and the manufacturer of the renowned Bayraktar, has established a new company in Morocco under the name Atlas Defence.

According to the reports, Atlas Defence Sarl will specialize in the design, manufacturing, development, and maintenance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as the production and sale of spare parts related to them.

According to the website Le Desk, the Turkish company will set up a factory in Morocco.

Additionally, the Turkish company will be active in the design and development of technological products and defense industry systems, providing electronic equipment, software, and mechanical systems.

The establishment of the company was disclosed in the latest issue of the Moroccan Official Gazette. The Turkish company will carry out this project in Morocco with an investment of 2.5 million dirhams, shared between the two founding partners, Selçuk Bayraktar and his brother, Haluk Bayraktar, both prominent figures in Baykar.

Selçuk Bayraktar

Selçuk Bayraktar is particularly well known as the chairman of Baykar and the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as he is married to Sumeyye Erdoğan.

According to the Moroccan news site “Zanka 20”, the agreement to establish the company in Morocco dates back to October 2024 and includes the creation of local production lines for the Bayraktar TB-2 and Akıncı drones, which are among the world’s most advanced UAVs. Atlas Defence reportedly plans to produce 1,000 drones annually, boosting Morocco’s local defense industry.

The report also states that General Fouad Momen, head of the Fourth Office responsible for military procurement within the Moroccan Army, met with Selçuk Bayraktar at the ADEX 2024 exhibition in Azerbaijan.

At the time, reports suggested that this meeting could be of significant importance in strengthening military cooperation between Morocco and Turkey, particularly in drone technology and advanced defense systems.

During their meeting, the two sides exchanged memorabilia, and General Fouad Momen received a model of the Turkish stealth drone “Bayraktar Kızılelma”, indicating an interest in this advanced jet-powered UAV, unlike other Turkish drones such as the Bayraktar TB-2, which is already in service with the Moroccan Army.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Baykar revealed that it had delivered Bayraktar TB-2 drones to Morocco in August last year, without providing further details.

The Bayraktar TB-2 is considered one of the most successful combat drones in the world, having been used in multiple wars and proving its effectiveness on the battlefield. It has a length of 6.5 meters, a wingspan of 12 meters, and a takeoff weight of 700 kg. It can carry 150 kg of munitions, including laser-guided MAM-L missiles and MAM-C anti-armor missiles.
