Israel Condemns Flag Desecration by Jordanian Official Amid Tensions

The Diplomatic Fallout Between Jordan and Israel Escalates Over Flag Incident

Watan-On Wednesday, Israel condemned what it described as the “desecration” of its flag in front of the entrance to the Jordanian Bar Association in the capital, Amman.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “We strongly condemn the desecration of the Israeli flag by the Vice President of the Jordanian Bar Association, Walid Al-Adwan, at the entrance to the association, as documented this week and shared via social media.”

In a statement, it considered that “placing the Israeli flag on the floor at the entrance and declaring that ‘anyone who enters must step on it’ is an incitement that is not in line with the spirit of the peace agreement between the two countries,” referring to the 1994 peace treaty.

It added that “Israel expects the Jordanian government to condemn the incident and take measures to prevent such actions from recurring.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by saying it “filed an official protest with the Jordanian embassy in Israel.”

For years, the Israeli flag has been on the floor of the Professional Syndicates Complex, but the circulated image shows the newly opened headquarters of the Bar Association.

Previously, an image spread of former Jordanian Information Minister Jumana Ghunaimat stepping on the Israeli flag during her visit to the syndicates’ headquarters, which angered Tel Aviv. It issued a “strongly worded” protest to Amman and summoned the Jordanian ambassador to Israel in response to the image.

Relations between Amman and Tel Aviv have significantly deteriorated since Israel began its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.

Jordan is currently under intense pressure from Washington to accept former President Donald Trump’s plan to seize the Gaza Strip and forcibly relocate Palestinians from there to countries, including Jordan.

After meeting with Trump in Washington on Tuesday, King Abdullah II of Jordan stated on X that he had confirmed to the U.S. president his rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Trump revealed, in a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on February 4, 2025, that the U.S. intends to seize Gaza after displacing Palestinians from it.

Since January 25, 2025, Trump has been promoting a plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries like Jordan and Egypt, a plan that both countries have rejected, along with other Arab states and regional and international organizations.

With U.S. support, Israel has committed genocide in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and January 19, 2025, resulting in around 160,000 Palestinian martyrs and injured, most of them children and women, and more than 14,000 missing.

Israel has turned Gaza into the world’s largest prison, as it has besieged it for the 18th year. The genocide forced about two million of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinian residents to flee under tragic conditions, with severe and deliberate shortages of food, water, and medicine.
For decades, Israel has occupied lands in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, refusing to withdraw and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the borders before the 1967 war.
