Netanyahu’s Washington Visit: Fear of Trump Shaped His Decisions

Watan-The Hebrew newspaper Maariv has revealed intriguing details about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to Washington, where he refrained from taking two significant steps out of fear of angering former U.S. President Donald Trump. This cautious approach reflects Netanyahu’s growing sensitivity in dealing with the White House, especially with the U.S. elections approaching and Trump’s influence rising once again.

According to the report, Netanyahu was expected to make a phone call to U.S. President Joe Biden to thank him for the military and financial support Washington has provided to Israel since October 7, 2023, which included a $14 billion emergency aid package. However, Netanyahu ultimately chose not to make the call, fearing it would enrage Trump, who might perceive it as a political betrayal.

Maariv commented on the situation, stating: “Netanyahu was extremely afraid of Trump, whose blood would boil if he spoke with Biden… For him, insulting Trump’s honor is an unforgivable and fatal sin that cannot go unpunished.”

A customary practice during Israeli prime ministers’ visits to the U.S. is to hold meetings with major Jewish community leaders in America. However, Netanyahu deliberately avoided such a meeting despite its symbolic and political importance. According to the newspaper, this was because most of these leaders belong to the liberal camp, which opposes Trump. Netanyahu reportedly preferred to avoid any confrontation that might upset his potential American ally.

Netanyahu’s visit to Washington underscored his political dependence on the White House, showing that he is now unable to make decisive moves without direct approval from the U.S. administration. This situation reflects his growing political vulnerability both domestically and internationally, amid increasing global pressure and the security challenges facing Israel.
