Watan-The Tunisian Jewish singer Chi Maimoun has sparked widespread controversy in Tunisia after photos and videos surfaced showing him wearing the Israeli military uniform during the war on Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023.
The footage, widely circulated on social media, triggered outrage among Tunisians, who demanded his prosecution, accusing him of participating in Israel’s assault on the Palestinian people.
Images and videos show Chi Maimoun, originally from Djerba Island, dressed in Israeli military attire while in Gaza during the war, fueling public anger. Many Tunisians called for him to face trial for allegedly taking part in Israel’s aggression on Gaza.
Following the backlash, Maimoun restricted access to his social media accounts, including X (Twitter) and Instagram, though some videos remain on his YouTube channel.
Tunisia Condemns Gaza War and Supports Palestinian Struggle
Meanwhile, the Israeli army is facing recruitment challenges, including a shortage of soldiers and exhaustion among reservists, especially amid its ongoing war in Gaza. The issue has ignited political debates about mandatory conscription for all societal groups, including Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jews. In June 2024, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that Haredi Jews must serve in the military, sparking major controversy.
Tunisia has strongly condemned Israel’s war on Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid, and an end to the blockade on the Palestinian people.
Tunisia also reaffirmed its firm support for the Palestinian struggle, advocating for their right to establish a fully sovereign independent state. The Tunisian government urged the international community to intervene to stop the genocide in Gaza, emphasizing its unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their fight for their legitimate rights.
Additionally, Tunisia has witnessed massive public demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine, with hundreds of thousands of Tunisians taking to the streets to express their support for Gaza.
