Gaza Health Ministry Reports 970 Deaths in 48 Hours Amid Intensified Israeli Bombardment
The Gaza Health Ministry released a new report on Wednesday, revealing that 970 more Palestinians were killed within the past 48 hours as Israeli forces escalated their attacks on the besieged enclave.
As of Monday noon, the ministry had recorded 48,577 Palestinian deaths. By Wednesday noon, the death toll had risen to 49,547.
Since Tuesday morning, Israel dramatically intensified its bombing campaign, carrying out widespread airstrikes on civilians. According to the ministry, the attacks resulted in 404 deaths and over 562 injuries in a single day.
The Government Media Office reported that among those killed on Tuesday were 174 children, 89 women, and 32 elderly individuals, adding to the overall toll of Palestinian casualties.
The attacks mark the most significant breach of the fragile ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States in January 2025.
Israeli airstrikes targeted residential homes, shelters, and displacement camps, causing massive destruction and unprecedented humanitarian suffering.
In early March 2025, a 42-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel expired. The truce, which began on January 19, aimed at halting the war and facilitating hostage exchanges.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has refused to implement the second phase of the deal, seeking to secure the release of more Israeli captives without honoring its commitments, including ending the war and withdrawing from Gaza.
Hamas, on the other hand, has reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement, urging mediators to immediately resume negotiations for the second phase, which includes an Israeli withdrawal and a full cessation of the war.
Since October 7, 2023, with U.S. support, Israel has carried out a campaign of mass killings in Gaza, resulting in over 161,000 Palestinian casualties, including mostly women and children, and leaving more than 14,000 missing.
