“Mosquito Protocol”: Israeli Soldiers Accused of Forcing Gaza Civilians, Including Children, into Deadly Missions

Revelations about the “Mosquito Protocol” expose a disturbing military practice where Palestinians, even minors, are forced into life-threatening missions during Israel’s war on Gaza.

Watan-In a serious development exposing the grave violations committed by the Israeli occupation army in the Gaza Strip, revelations have emerged about the use of the so-called “Mosquito Protocol”—an unconventional military tactic that involves forcing Palestinian civilians, including children, to carry out dangerous tasks instead of soldiers.

According to documented testimonies circulated by activists and journalists on social media platforms, this protocol forces civilians to enter homes and tunnels suspected of being booby-trapped, to check for explosives or resistance fighters—exposing them to immediate death, in clear violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.

An Israeli soldier named “Tomi” confirmed that his commander ordered him and his fellow soldiers to use civilians to detect explosives. He noted that some soldiers refused, but the commander insisted that this was an institutional policy within the army. The soldier added that senior leadership was fully aware of it and turned a blind eye.

The abuse didn’t stop with adults—it also included children. Testimonies revealed that a 10-year-old Palestinian boy and his 9-year-old cousin were forced to enter a four-story building to check for explosives. The boy stated that soldiers beat him when he refused, before ultimately forcing him at gunpoint to carry out the mission.

The practice known as the “Mosquito Protocol” is not new in the occupation’s history, but has resurfaced amid the ongoing war on Gaza since October 2023, which has killed tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children, amid a disturbing silence from the international community and media complicity in some cases.

This conduct clearly violates Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits the use of civilians as human shields or exposing them to danger during military operations.

International human rights organizations are now urgently called upon to conduct transparent investigations into these practices and to hold Israeli commanders accountable for war crimes, especially as these testimonies have come from Israeli soldiers themselves.
