Maradona’s Autopsy Reveals Enlarged Heart, No Traces of Drugs or Alcohol

Forensic experts testify in Argentine court that the football legend suffered from chronic heart issues and liver fibrosis before his death in 2020.

Watan-A court in Argentina on Tuesday heard testimony from forensic experts involved in the autopsy of late football legend Diego Maradona. The experts confirmed that his heart was larger than normal, that he suffered from liver fibrosis, and that no traces of alcohol or drugs were found in his body at the time of death.

Forensic expert Alejandro Ezequiel Vega told the court that Maradona’s heart was “enlarged” and weighed 503 grams, whereas a normal heart typically weighs between 250 and 300 grams.

Maradona, who led Argentina to a World Cup title in 1986, died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60.

Vega explained that examination of the heart revealed Maradona had been suffering from “chronic lack of blood and oxygen flow” due to chronic cardiac ischemia.

The autopsy report confirmed that his death was caused by acute pulmonary edema resulting from congestive heart failure.

Maradona passed away at his home in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, just days after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot between his skull and brain.
