Algerian Party Warns of U.S. and Israeli-Backed Provocations in Western Sahara and Sahel

Workers’ Party accuses Trump of fueling tensions between Algeria and Morocco, warns of wider imperialist plots to ignite regional wars and destabilize North Africa.

Watan-An Algerian political party has warned against U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to exploit the Western Sahara issue as a tool of blackmail and a means of encouraging military confrontation between Algeria and Morocco. The party sees these maneuvers as part of broader imperialist schemes aimed at igniting wars between brotherly peoples.

In a statement, the Workers’ Party expressed strong confidence in the awareness of the Moroccan people, whom it described as “massively and heroically mobilized against the normalization of relations with the terrorist Zionist entity,” imposed on their country by Trump during his previous term as part of the so-called “Abraham Accords.”

The leftist party, led by Louisa Hanoune, asserted that the Moroccan people will not be fooled by Trump’s current “blatant” statements nor by his attempts to exploit the Western Sahara issue to serve his political and diplomatic ambitions.

Imperialist Schemes Fuel Regional Tensions over Western Sahara

The party emphasized that these maneuvers are part of a broader global imperialist plan to ignite wars between brotherly nations in the service of major powers and arms dealers. It warned that such schemes are accelerating the global trend toward widespread warfare, calling for increased solidarity and unity among peoples—particularly African nations—to thwart these destructive plans.

This is not the first time Hanoune has warned of efforts to provoke conflict between Algeria and Morocco. She previously pointed to Emirati movements to “punish Algeria” for its anti-normalization stance by creating tensions on its borders in the Sahel and attempting to trigger a war with Morocco. The former presidential candidate warned at the time that the UAE was inciting war between the two countries in service of the Zionist entity, urging vigilance against such plots.

The Workers’ Party’s statement came in response to a U.S. State Department release following talks between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, in which Rubio reaffirmed U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and support for Morocco’s “serious, credible, and realistic autonomy plan” as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the conflict.

Algeria, in turn, reiterated that “the Western Sahara issue is fundamentally about a decolonization process that has not been completed, and an unfulfilled right to self-determination.”

Algeria’s Foreign Ministry expressed its regret over the U.S. position, stating that it was “disappointed to see such a stance from a permanent member of the Security Council, who should be upholding international law and Security Council resolutions.”

On a related note, the Workers’ Party also addressed the escalating tensions between Algeria and Mali following the downing of a Malian drone by the Algerian army after it reportedly violated Algerian airspace. The party expressed deep concern over what it described as an “unfortunate escalation” in bilateral relations, which now appear to be spreading to other neighboring countries in the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa.

Algerian Party Warns of Foreign Exploitation and Regional Destabilization in the Sahel

The party highlighted that the Sahel region is rich in natural resources, particularly energy and minerals, making it a target for foreign exploitation. It stated that the region has long been a victim of blatant foreign interventions and manipulations, particularly through debt and structural adjustment programs that have weakened state institutions and led to the spread of terrorist groups.

The Workers’ Party emphasized that the same imperialist powers backing Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinian people are the ones working to encircle Algeria, which shares more than 6,000 kilometers of borders with war-torn or externally manipulated countries.

It added that the growing Israeli presence in the region has only worsened an already volatile situation. The party stressed that Algeria, loyal to its anti-colonial principles and refusal of foreign interference, has every right to defend its sovereignty—hard-won through the blood and sacrifices of millions of martyrs. It clarified that holding firmly to national sovereignty is not chauvinism or aggression, but a legitimate and historical stance, one that distinguishes clearly between governments and peoples.

The statement concluded with a call for de-escalation and the preservation of regional peace.

The crisis worsened after Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso decided to recall their ambassadors from Algeria, prompting significant reactions. Some Algerian factions accused Mali’s military leadership of attempting to turn the Sahel into a battleground for global powers. Several political parties in Algeria expressed concern over what they described as unjustified Malian escalation while rejecting any infringement on Algerian sovereignty or dragging the country into regional conflicts that serve foreign agendas.
