Israel Releases Palestinian Prisoners Amid Ongoing War and Allegations of Torture

Dozens of detainees from Gaza returned in poor health, with visible signs of abuse, as part of a sudden release by Israeli forces.

Watan-In a surprise move on Thursday morning, the Israeli occupation army released a number of Palestinian detainees who had been arrested from the Gaza Strip.

According to the Prisoners Media Office affiliated with Hamas on its Telegram channel, “A number of released prisoners from Israeli jails have arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.”

The office published the names of ten released detainees, most of whom are elderly. It also posted a photo of one of them, noting that “he is unable to walk and shows clear signs of torture.”

Local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that “around 80 Palestinian detainees from various parts of the Gaza Strip entered the territory this morning through the Kissufim gate in the separation fence east of Khan Younis (south).”

Released Gaza Detainees Arrive in Critical Condition After Torture in Israeli Prisons

Medical sources reported that 10 of the released prisoners arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in “dire physical condition due to torture and the harsh conditions they endured in Israeli prisons.”

The sources said medical teams are conducting necessary examinations on the prisoners as they await the arrival of their families. One of the released detainees, they noted, “arrived in extremely critical condition, unable to move and bearing visible signs of torture.”

Israel had previously released hundreds of detainees it had arrested from Gaza as part of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, which came into effect on January 19.

However, on March 18, Israel reneged on the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement—after 58 days—and resumed its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

With U.S. backing, Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 166,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, the majority of them women and children, along with more than 11,000 missing.
