Watan-The Israeli army said on Saturday that it had completed the encirclement of Rafah and the establishment of the “Morag Axis” that separates the city from Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, in its latest crimes in the genocide it is conducting against the Palestinian sector.
In a statement posted on its website, it mentioned: “The 36th Division forces have completed the encirclement of Rafah.” It added that during the past 24 hours, “the forces completed the opening of the Morag Axis, which cuts across the southern Gaza Strip between Rafah and Khan Yunis.”
Israeli Army Plans to Annex Rafah to Buffer Zone: 75 sq km Zone and Morag Axis Control
This comes after the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz revealed on Wednesday that the army is preparing to annex the Rafah area, which constitutes one-fifth of the Gaza Strip’s land, “to the buffer zone, which Israel prohibits Palestinians from accessing,” considering this operation as “genocide” against the city.
The newspaper reported at that time that the buffer zone the Israeli army is preparing to establish spans 75 square kilometers and is located between the Philadelphia and Morag axes, including the city of Rafah and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Netanyahu’s “Philadelphia 2 Axis” and Gaza’s Isolation Tensions Rise
The Morag Axis lies between the cities of Khan Yunis and Rafah in southern Gaza and is named after an Israeli settlement that existed in the sector before Israel’s withdrawal in 2005.
On April 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video recording: “We control the Morag Axis, which will be the second Philadelphia Axis.”
On Thursday, Hamas accused Netanyahu of imposing a fait accompli in Rafah and isolating it, along with the Gaza Strip, from its Arab depth.
In a statement, Hamas said: “Netanyahu’s declaration of creating what he called the ‘Philadelphia 2 Axis’ and the actions of his army to impose a fait accompli in Rafah, forcibly displacing its residents, and annexing it to what is known as the buffer zone on the border with sisterly Egypt, confirms that he aims to isolate Gaza entirely from its Arab depth.”
