French MP Naïma Moutchou Targeted with Racist Slurs: “No Place for an Arab Face Here”

Naïma Moutchou, of Moroccan descent, received a hate-filled letter at the French National Assembly, sparking widespread political condemnation and renewed calls to combat racism in French politics.

Watan-French MP Naïma Moutchou, from the center-right “Horizons” party, was subjected to racist abuse via a letter she received on Monday at the French National Assembly.

“You have an Arab face, you have no place in this country that gathers the world’s garbage. You are taking the bread of the French. Leave quickly!” — these were the words written on a page from a Paris Match magazine article featuring her.

The parliamentarian shared the message on social media, stating:“It’s violent, racist, and shameful. I feel a deep pain in my heart and a cold anger.”

She added, “I think of my parents, their sacrifices, their worn hands, their dignity, and their silence,” while posting an image of the hateful message.

She continued: “I am French with Moroccan roots. I will never apologize for my identity or for defending what I believe is just,” confirming that she has filed a complaint.

Many MPs expressed solidarity with her, including parliamentarians from across the political spectrum.
Clémence Guetté, an MP from the left-wing “France Insoumise” (LFI) party, voiced her support for Naïma Moutchou.

Mathilde Panot, head of the radical left party’s parliamentary bloc, called the incident “disgusting”, writing: “Faced with racism, all my support goes to you, Naïma Moutchou.”

MPs from her own centrist party also reacted, including former health minister Agnès Firmin Le Bodo, who described Moutchou’s anger as “legitimate,” adding: “We must get to the roots of these plagues: racism, antisemitism, and discrimination that are corroding our country.”

It’s worth noting that Naïma Moutchou is not the first MP to receive hateful and abusive mail. In September last year, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, filed a complaint after receiving antisemitic letters.

According to the French Ministry of Interior, verbal and physical attacks against MPs increased by 32% in 2022 compared to 2021.
