Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir Resigns, Calling Ceasefire with Hamas a National Insult
Ben-Gvir and Military Leaders Step Down, Citing Discontent with Government's Handling of Gaza Ceasefire
Watan-The far-right Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, described the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) as a national insult to Israel.
Ben-Gvir stated, “The ceasefire agreement is not just a surrender deal but a national insult to Israel. We must stop it and immediately return to war.”
Ben-Gvir’s resignation from his position took effect on Tuesday morning, 48 hours after its formal submission.
Ben-Gvir’s party, “Jewish Power,” announced last Sunday its resignation from the ruling coalition in protest of the ceasefire agreement, which it described as “shameful” in Gaza.
It should be noted that the departure of the Jewish Power party from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government does not mean the collapse of the coalition government or affect the ceasefire. However, Ben-Gvir‘s departure is expected to destabilize the coalition.
Additionally, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi, also announced his resignation on Tuesday, initiating a series of resignations within the Israeli military leadership due to what has been considered a failure on October 7, 2023. His resignation will take effect on March 6.
Previously, several Israeli officials resigned over the perceived failure, most notably the Head of Military Intelligence, Aharon Haliva.
