Watan-Hazem Al-Sharaa, the brother of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, has drawn the attention of the media and social media users after his notable appearance as part of the official delegation accompanying the president on his visit to Saudi Arabia.
His presence was documented in several photos alongside prominent officials, where he was seated in the second position after Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani. He was also at the forefront of the delegation when the president introduced government members, fueling speculation about his potential appointment to a high-ranking position in the state.
Hazem Al-Sharaa is considered a mysterious figure who has not previously been prominent on the political scene, yet he has an extensive background in law, economics, and administration. Born in 1975, he is the second son of economic expert Hussein Al-Sharaa. He studied law at Damascus University and began his career in the judiciary, working under pseudonyms in the presidency of the Idlib courts and the Court of First Instance in Sarmada. He later served as Deputy Minister of Justice before heading the General Authority for Zakat.
Beyond the legal field, Al-Sharaa has vast experience in the business sector, having managed several major companies in Iraq, including the “Al-Hayat” soft drinks company. He also served as the General Manager of “Kronji Group” from 2019 to 2022 and worked with “Fattal Group” between 2014 and 2016 before taking over the management of “Bait Al-Emarat” company during 2017 and 2018.
Although Hazem Al-Sharaa had not previously appeared in the political or governmental arena, either before or after Syria’s liberation, his presence in the official delegation during President Ahmed Al-Sharaa‘s first visit to Saudi Arabia has raised questions about the role he may play in the coming phase. Some have described him as “shrewd” and “polite,” reinforcing the possibility of him being assigned high-level diplomatic responsibilities.
According to close sources, his presence in the official delegation may be a prelude to an announcement of a new position, with speculation suggesting that he is a leading candidate for the role of Syria’s Ambassador Extraordinary to Riyadh. This aligns with the Syrian government’s approach to strengthening its relations with Arab countries following recent political changes.
