EU Approves UV-Treated Insect Powder for Food: A Step Toward Sustainable Nutrition
Starting Monday, the European Union will permit the use of UV-treated mealworm powder in food, aiming to enhance vitamin D content while ensuring transparency in labeling.
Watan-There is no doubt that many Asian countries offer a variety of insect-based dishes, which are considered rich in proteins. However, the inclusion of insect powder in food remains entirely unfamiliar in Europe.
Nevertheless, starting tomorrow, Monday, the European Union will begin allowing the use of insect powder treated with ultraviolet radiation, specifically full-fat mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae powder, in food products across all EU member states.
Mealworm Beetle
Although mealworm beetles have already been approved as food, the new authorization covers their treatment with ultraviolet radiation, which aims to enhance the vitamin D content in the powder.
According to the new regulation, only a French company will initially be permitted to market the treated larvae.
The EU has allowed the use of insects in food for several years, though manufacturers must apply for a license.
If insects are included as an ingredient, they must be clearly stated on the packaging.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has emphasized that “EU citizens have the freedom to choose what they eat, and no one is forcing them to consume insects or worms.”
